I just noticed the link in my bookmarks and clicked on--it truly has been 2 years since I posted! I am so sorry. I hope that most of you have been keeping up with us through our prayer letters and Facebook.
So, now, 2 years and a month in Bolivia and we are going strong. The new semester just began at the university and we are gearing up our English for Veterinarians class and putting the finishing touches on the plans for an Alpha Course.
The new fun project that is becoming a bit obsessive in the online research phase is a chicken project at a nearby orphanage. We are looking at plans for portable chicken coops, "tractors" if you will, to house at least 50 layers to provide eggs for the kids to eat and maybe even sell. There is a traditional brick and mortar coop to renovate as well, but we'd like to try to keep the hens on the cow pasture (there are 2 dairy cows) for prettier eggs and less feed input costs.
I have discovered that raising backyard chickens in high-end coops has become a pinterest obsession in the US. I think some chickens live better than we do! While I'd love to build a train shaped coop with chandelier feeders, I think we'll stick to function over form for at least this first iteration. I'll try to keep up a bit with this project here!Carney Familyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08328006328710037019noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6799326066428443855.post-46125788093339783852014-03-03T10:41:00.000-05:002014-03-03T10:41:31.840-05:002 weeks down!Feliz Carnaval! We have officially been in Bolivia for 2 weeks, and what an amazing 2 weeks it has been! The first week was one of many appointments and meeting new people in Santa Cruz, which will be our home in a few months. The second week has been an intensive week of language study. That sounds pretty cut and dried, doesn't it?
Well, the reality of this has been lots of packing, unpacking, repacking, unpacking, then learning a crazy public transport system and how to buy things in street markets. It really has been a ton of fun, though stressful at times. We have had great friends to help us along the way and have met many nice folks who are eager to help us adjust.
The rest of this blog will be a photo commentary, so enjoy! Keep praying for our visa process, as we are in day 14 of our 30 allotted days and are still missing papers from the US.... We will be paying late fees I am sure! Pray also for our language and culture acquisition. For example, yesterday we went to lunch after church and had a bowl of soup then waited 30-40 minutes for some fried rice. Ooops, our fault, they were waiting to cook it until we went and got salad from the table. Lesson learned!
Ok, now, really the pictures!

Luke 14:15 “Blessed is the one who will eat bread in the kingdom of God.”

“In the kingdom of God” points to the future messianic banquet that the Jews thought would only be for them. Jesus, however, uses the parable of the Great Banquet to teach that the guests that were originally invited will miss the banquet(v.24) and will be replaced instead by “the poor, crippled, blind, and lame” and the outsiders (the Gentiles) found in the “highways and hedges” (vv. 21, 23).

I think of this parable more this time of year than the rest of the year, I must admit, and probably not the way Jesus meant. We come together during the holiday season to sit down with our family and close friends to symbolically give thanks for what we have in the form of an elaborate dinner. But what about those other people around us?

Christian community at the table also signifies our obligation to one another as part of God’s family. The Lord’s Prayer teaches us to pray for “our daily bread”; it’s OUR daily bread that we eat, not an individual thing. We share our bread, just as we share the bread of the covenant we have with Jesus in Communion. It is in the sharing of our bread that binds us together, not only with our physical bodies, but binds us believers together in Spirit.

The one bread that is given to us (Christ) unites us in a firm covenant! Now no one must be hungry as long as the others have bread, and whoever breaks the community of our bodily life also breaks our community of the Spirit. Both our physical and Spiritual communities are linked together...

So, why not invite others that may not have anywhere else to go? The college student that can’t travel home or the immigrant family that just moved to the area, or a homeless or less fortunate person in your earthly community. After all, there is only one community, one body, and one kingdom of God!

We Americans love our processed food--Some sources say McDonalds alone sells 300,000,000 chicken McNuggets annually. Just think of all the other restaurants and grocery store nuggets! We are so crazy about our nuggets that those resembling presidents sell for thousands of dollars.
I think many of our churches and books about Christianity are like chicken nuggets--we take bits and pieces and smash them together with some flavoring, chemicals, and a bit of sweetener to make it palatable. These consumers don't know what a chicken really is or where the nugget comes from, but it is quick and convenient. Consumers of this type of gospel like the convenience of feel-good sermons or quick, preinterpreted stories and devotionals, but surely don't read the whole Bible and think for themselves about it.
KFC has taken one step up from this--they have boneless original recipe fried chicken! You've seen the "I ate the bones" ad, right? I love the stuff--I am pretty lazy and like real chicken without bones, even if it isn't quite as flavorful. So, what is my boneless recipe of the gospel? I have to admit that some days my scripture study is on my phone, emailed right to me from the Upper Room with a hyperlink to the appropriate Biblical text. This version certainly has a bit of real meat in it, but leaves out the messy parts that make you think "too much"
Next step up? The whole fryer or roaster in the grocery case. Skin, bones, heart, giblets, and skin, but no blood or feathers. You have a bit of work and thinking to do on your own with this one--it takes a while to cook or to break down into smaller parts. This is some serious Bible study and worship that gets to the heart of the matter. These are great churches and sincere believers struggling with the faith and increasing in knowledge. Sounds like the pinnacle? Not quite...
The whole, live bird! I hope we don't always leave the processing and plucking of the bird to others. Raising a bird and processing it from field to table is an experience most people won't have in the US in this era. Along the same vein, I am afraid that many people leave the deep theological thinking to their pastors and don't spend significant time and investment of thought in exegesis or prolonged study of the word or theological concepts.
Thanks for reading this rambling--now go eat some chicken and read some scripture!
Today as I drove through Virginia a storm hovered over the ridge, inspiring an odd bit of poetry. It was becoming rather dark and ominous (poem and the weather) and then the sun burst through and reminded me of how God uses our storms and wounds to bring new life and healing, shaping us as He desires. Living in the Appalachians and seeing how much they have weathered compared to the Rockies or Himals makes me appreciate God's redemptive power so much more. The big, young mountain ranges like these are raw and rugged, but the older ones like our beloved Appalachians have their scars covered with the verdant green of God's creation. He has covered their wounds and given shade and nourishment to the land. This creates a symbiotic relationship of the worn-down mountains and the lush plant and animal life. This reminds me of the relationship of us with God--alone, we are craggy and sharp, unyielding and only a few relationships can grow. With God weathering and watering us we blossom and fruit in beauty.

Tell you about our last few days I suppose.
The water pump went out on my truck this am as we were leaving Amelia Island. God provided well for us though, we pulled into a gas station just as it started to make a funny noise and were blessed by a true service station who called a free tow service and very nice mechanic shop. They hopped right on it and had parts ordered in the first 15 minutes we were there. They estimated 3 hours! Praise God! We were debating about trading the old clunker for a different old car together home, but their estimate was reasonable.
Next blessing? We were walking distance to a wing place with pool tables and wi-if, so can kill time well.
Next one? We were planning to have a short visit this afternoon with Dr. Dorminy on our way back to Athens, but now they have opened their home to us to spend the night and finish the drive tomorrow!
Why were we in Fernandina you ask?
After we enjoyed some great fellowship in Albany and saw college friends in Albany and Tifton, we canoed overnight in Okefenokee swamp (pics to follow, camera is in the truck on the lift). Sunburned and filthy we realized we were less than an hour from the beach, so we headed over! Caleb always wants to go to the beach, though usually just for a day, so this was a nice spontaneous surprise before moving to a landlocked country!
Pray for the rest of our week as we have many miles left to cover, places to share our ministry and a family reunion yet to go! Trying to raise the last bit of support/partners we need to be landlocked!Carney Familyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08328006328710037019noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6799326066428443855.post-76371560782624180212013-04-21T08:02:00.002-04:002013-04-21T08:02:40.335-04:00From the land of Gators, fireants, and gnats!

Ahh, the sights of home! We are swinging through SOWEGA this week and showing Caleb what my childhood was like. As we go along, I realize that it maybe isn't so different from what his will be in Bolivia. It is hot and humid, there are things that will eat you in the river, and the ants are vicious. God knew what He was doing when he put me here as a child.
Besides the physical preparation for our move, it is great to visit with some of the people and places that were important in my spiritual preparation for missions. We are visiting a couple of churches today and have already seen a few old friends, with more to visit in the next few days.
I'll post again soon, with pictures from canoeing overnight in Okefenokee and update you as to our progress in partnership building. Remember, we only need about 50 more people committed to $20/month!
As soon as he saw me he began to run-walk (no running on deck!!) and gave me a big hug. Occasionally as he swam he'd look over to smile and wave. Now, I'd expect that much excitement from a kid whose parents aren't at lots of functions, but as a homeschool kid who is with me pretty much all day, every day?
I thought more about this as I watched the snow fall outside the natatorium (yes, it has been snowing nearly 3 days now-on Spring Break). The joy I felt at seeing that little beaming face must be the joy that God feels when we look at Him. I hope that I am in as constant communion with God as Caleb is with David and me. Even more so, I hope I remember to look up and see God in every moment of my life.
I challenge us today to look up and see God smiling back at us. Bask in knowing that He is always with us and finds great joy in our relationship. He is the loving Father who is at every practice, every game, every moment of our life if only we remember to look for Him.
This moment of realization was a great corollary to our Sunday School lesson last week in which Billy talked about how kids always looked for their parents as they went on the field during a game-those with good relationships could look up and know and then concentrate on the game versus those without just kept searching for affirmation from other sources. As we seek affirmation from God, we rely less on the affirmation of culture and are able to confidently share God's love with those we meet. I helped with spaying and neutering 60-some dogs and cats today at Lincoln Memorial University. Our assembly line of animals coming to the two of us surgeons was something to behold. It was fun to watch the students get into their groove practicing their technical skills and helping each other learn.

Enforced time with me means you have to chat! I learned about one graduate's passion for anesthesia and education, another student's brother serving with IMB in Europe, and yet another's whose sister has a new album being released (which my dad apparently played some tracks on).

The student with a missionary brother was surprised to hear about Christian Veterinary Mission, so it was great to share with her how her vet tech skills can be used to further God's kingdom!

Overall, it was a great reminder of how eager I am to be living life with my students in Bolivia! Looking forward to the surgery table and cattle working discussions we will have!

Oh, the tiring part--30+ surgeries for me in approximately 6 hours, thank goodness Dr. Burchette was there too to share the load. We were also so blessed to have our wonderful friend Dr. Jennifer Johnson there too to manage all the animals in recovery!

A departure from the usual blog, but we had a really cool 9th birthday yesterday and I'd like to share a bit about it! We are huge Tolkein fans, so a Hobbit party was just
the ticket for Caleb.

"In a hole in the barn there lived a hobbit. Not a dirty, wet hole, but a snug barn loft..."
Thanks to our friends and family that crowded 18 people into our tiny apartment and hay loft to make a memorable event for us all.
A new year, a new semester, new everything in the works! Same God though! How are you doing on your New Year’s resolutions, now that we are a week or so in?

A teacher friend was just talking about her excitement every new semester because you truly get a fresh start—new students, new course material, new schedule. That is such an exciting thing to have multiple times a year compared to other jobs that seem to drag on the same way for days to years.

Guess what, though?! God makes us new and refreshes us every day to try new and exciting things for His sake. Lamentations 3:22-23 reminds us, “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” We don’t have to be professors to enjoy that fresh start! Whether our job changes or stays the same, our attitude toward it and who we are serving through it can be refreshed every day.

With this, I challenge you to add another resolution! To accept God’s mercy every morning and proclaim it boldly to others.

We are getting more and more excited about our theoretical “change” in job description. Is our job really changing though? All of God’s children are called to “go and make disciples” wherever we are, so only our location is changing. Yes, our daily lives will be different, but our calling remains.

See these happy smiles? These are some of the girls at a girls’ home (orphanage) in Santa Cruz with their chickens. This will be one of the small differences in our lives—this project was begun by my predecessor and involves veterinary students in the care of chickens. This enables these kids to have extra protein and learn how to raise their own chickens so they can eat now and in the future.

We are so looking forward to getting there ASAP, especially since Lauren Spears, another CVM vet, has returned to the US to serve in a different role with CVM. There is a huge gap to fill where she was at the university and in communities, so we really feel the pressure to be there serving. Just a few dozen more people committed to monthly financial support and we can look at one-way tickets! Will you help us?
This is a great organization that helps fund missionaries through livestock.
http://www.steerinc.com/
Steer will buy a cow, doe, ewe, etc for you to keep in your herd. They pay for the animal, the vet bills, and you provide labor and feed. When she calves/kids/lambs and the offspring is sold, the sales price goes to STEER (so you declare no income for taxes) and 85% goes to our ministry!
So, anyone out there who raises livestock (it also works on shares of milk or wheat) and would like to help us in this way, contact me for more info! It is a 3 year commitment through Steer.
Puzzled? The body of Christ is an amazing collection of unique characters--it is a bit puzzling! Each piece is fitted together with care to make a glorious scene. What happens if one is missing or turned backwards?
Like a puzzle, we each have our own role to play in sharing the picture of God's story. We aren't all sky or eyes or grass or whatever--each piece is unique. Even better, though is that we start our as blank cardboard of a shape and God creates a masterpiece as we allow Him to paint our lives in His masterpiece and be placed where He can best use us.
If we resist or ruin the piece that we are, God's purpose can still be fulfilled. He can work in a few ways when that happens--repaint us and use us in the same place, or if we aren't willing to fulfill His purpose at that time, a new piece can fill the space we left.
I recently ran across a puzzle piece replacement service on the web (puzzle doctor). You send them the pieces around the missing one and they recreate the shape of the piece and custom paint the remainder to match the puzzle. This is a metaphor of the second way God can work around our disobedience. God's will shall be accomplished, but it takes a bit longer having to rework another piece to fit where one already was. How much better if we, the bruised and disobedient piece allow ourselves to be found, cleaned and returned to the place God created for us?
Shine your part of the picture brightly and with joy that you are right where God wants you. Christmas is here! Oh, wait, it began in October. I was very tempted to complain about the commercialization of Christmas and the long wind-up to the event, and about how we miss so many important moments of life by starting Christmas essentially as soon as summer ends. Convicted.

How long did God prepare mankind for Christ’s birth? Since the beginning of creation we have been told about God’s plan of redemption—look at all the prophecies! I guess complaining about Christmas coming too early is not really fair. God desires that we live every day in expectation of His coming! The caution is to ensure we are enjoying the moments of today while we look forward with eager anticipation.

It feels like our family has spent an eternity planning and preparing for life. We have been nearly a whole year in this deputation process. Some days it feels like forever with our move nowhere in sight, while others feel like the year has flown by. As we have been able to see more extended family over the holidays it seems to come in a rush. We are marking all of the “lasts” for a while and really striving to live each moment here fully, not always planning and wishing and thinking about arriving in Bolivia.

Our much anticipated arrival is soon we hope, but it doesn’t end there! We continue to look to Jesus’ example in this aspect as well. The story of Christ doesn’t end with His arrival and ours won’t end there either. Jesus spent time learning the language and culture of Israel well before beginning His official “ministry.” That is what we plan to do as well—language and culture acquisition are critical to our effectiveness. Wise men from far away lands came to visit Jesus during this time, so hint, hint, you can come visit us too. (You don’t have to bring frankincense, but some baking soda would be appreciated!)

Enjoy the preparations as much as the event! The decorations and arrangements don’t have to be perfect (Jesus wasn’t a planned c-section at the best hospital in town), so enjoy time with people celebrating relationships more than perfect decorations and meals.

Pray with us that this Christmas will bring opportunity for all of us to share the joy of Christ with others.

We are progressing steadily in our budget raising process—please pray for our patience in these preparations. We want each meeting with people to bless them as well as us and the Bolivians. Pray about partnering with us on a regular basis. Pray too for our family as we begin our goodbyes over the next few months.

We wish you a joyous Christmas!

Caleb and I have been working on poetry this week. I thought I would post about Rudyard Kipling's "If", but I figured everyone memorized that at one point. I think we will work on memorizing it next week. So, instead I found this great one by Edwin Markham.
How well do we use our wit emboldened by Love (notice the capital in the poem) to draw people in? Christ calls us to do just that! Together with Love (Christ), we do win and are able to share with people the incomprehensible joy that we have in Christ.
We are called to love one another, even if we are shut out--pray for those that have called us names (Matthew 5:11-14) and find a way to draw our circle around them.Carney Familyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08328006328710037019noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6799326066428443855.post-61023078732285512852012-11-03T21:51:00.000-04:002012-11-03T21:52:06.564-04:00Cleaning out the junkWe are nearly completely moved out of our house and in to our snug little apartment! Today we spent cleaning out the hay loft to create a "hideout" for Caleb and his buddies. After that Caleb decided he wanted to cook. We baked baguettes and made ratatouille--yum!
What does this have to do with our lives and ministry? Well, it is just the next stage of our life I guess. We have cleaned out all our sentimental things and random things of life. Finally, there is the spiritual insight we have been waiting for!
What worldly baggage do we take before the throne? Have we taken the time and emotional energy to sort through it all? As we toss out, yard sale, recycle things we have clung to for years (do I really need a sweater from high school or bank statement from 1993?), I wonder how many idolatrous ideas and pointless things clutter my brain like our basement! Pray that God will help us all to pare down our lives to keep Him first in everything!
Pray for us tomorrow as we have a luncheon at our church and present our ministry needs. Also, pray for more opportunities to share our story and encourage partners.Carney Familyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08328006328710037019noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6799326066428443855.post-10831302751695902272012-10-01T07:23:00.003-04:002012-10-01T07:32:56.165-04:00Avengers as a cultural communication modelIron Man is the Ugly American! We have been at the Center for Intercultural Studies for 2 weeks now and boy, does it change your perspective on life. David and I watched the Avengers last night with a classmate and the whole time I kept noticing all the blunders we have learned about in class. Tony Stark may be the most noticeable and stereotypical "American" with his post-modern philosophy, loud music, and incessant movie references (to people frozen in ice or from other planets that would NOT get them).
In other words, after 2 weeks of diligent work in class, I think it is time for a movie day--I'd even be willing to write a paper on it!
Actually, this class is really interesting. We live with 34 other adults and 20 kids on campus and are having a blast during our free times watching the kids play and developing relationships with other missionaries from many sending organizations. There is a lot of critical thinking homework, but it sure shows how amazing God is!
I am excited, but won't bore you with the details! Looking forward to applying all this in Bolivia ASAP!Carney Familyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08328006328710037019noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6799326066428443855.post-39622947693835461352012-09-04T07:49:00.000-04:002012-09-04T07:49:22.587-04:00The fishermen's sheepAt CVM Shortcourse >100 veterinary and related folks gathered for worship and learning about long-term, short-term and workplace ministry. Wow! Always a great time. There was also a workshop on some tools used in poverty alleviation by Dr. Ravi Jayakaran-great speaker and man!
One of the teachings that stuck with me though is about Peter with Jesus after the resurrection. You know, "Feed my sheep...take care of my lambs...feed my sheep." What did Jesus ask at the beginning of His ministry? "Come, follow me and I will make you fishers of men." Jesus met them where they were, at the sea and spoke in metaphors they understood (fishing) and then developed them into the men he wanted them to be--shepherds. If He had started talking to them about sheep in the beginning, would they have listened?
Take-home message? Meet people where they are and find a redemptive analogy that applies to their lives (this applies to our neighbors in the US as well as a new tribe). Don't speak churchese to them! Fishermen don't understand sheep!
Wow, I have been terrible at this blogging thing this summer! It has certainly flown by. To recap our adventures, we spent 4th of July at Yosemite, the rest of July and August working like crazy while Dr. Oller had a beautiful baby girl, then a quick trip to Kansas City to visit Hollie and attend CVM Shortcourse (more about that in a minute). Tomorrow we head to Seattle to the Christian Veterinary Mission home office for a board meeting and our psych eval. We'll be home for a week, then off for a month to CIT in NC for cultural training. Whew! Oh, we are getting some homeschool done in that timeframe too.Carney Familyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08328006328710037019noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6799326066428443855.post-43381160258118568612012-05-29T21:35:00.000-04:002012-05-29T21:35:16.944-04:00Why so many birds? After the birdfeeder post, I began to wonder what we could learn from the birds and the great variety of species. I realized I needed to know how many birds man has classified (I'll bet there are some species we have never even seen). So from www.birding.com here are the stats:
"There are over 10,000 species of birds in the world. About 925 have been seen in
the U.S. and Canada. About 1,000 have been seen in Europe. By far the largest
concentration of bird species are found in South America. Over 3,200 species
have been seen there. In Colombia, Bolivia and Peru the species count for each
country tops 1,700. Here are some very general figures for the species count
for each continent:
3,200 South America
2,900 Asia
2,300 Africa
2,000 North America
(from Panama north + Caribbean)
1,700 Australia + surrounding
islands
1,000 Europe
65 Antarctica"

Wow! Mindboggling, isn't it? I am no orinthologist, but really, 65 species in Antarctica? I wonder if I have seen 65 species in my life (excluding zoos I guess). Last week I proposed that it was all about God's creativity, but I wonder if He didn't mean for us to learn from the birds, beyond Matthew 6.
God desires worship from every tongue and tribe and nation, that's the Great Commission and numerous other texts, right? What does that really look like in heaven or when the new heavens and new earth arrive? Are we all singing English from the hymnal in our pew? Ok, there is the house sparrow lending its song, but what about those other 10,000 birds?
If we compare people groups (tongues, tribes, nations) to the bird species...Wow, can you imagine all 10,000 birds singing at the same time? Overall, I'll bet it is a pretty wonderful sound. Sure there are a couple of birds whose songs I don't like as much, but I am humble enough to know that when our church sings, the overall sound is pleasant even if I am off key or on the wrong stanza!
The Joshua Project seeks to document and quantify people groups and our progress toward fulfilling the Great Commission. They list nearly 10,000 (9,978 in 2008) people groups in the world (these are ethno-linguistic and ethnocultural groups regardless of political boundaries). Striking similarity to the birds, eh? Of these people groups it is recorded that around 40% have are among the least evangelized and unreached peoples. That makes some 2.7 billion individuals!
God desires to have every people worshipping Him and singing, and uses so many ways to reach these people. We put out bird feeders to attract birds to hear their songs, God sacrificed His Son to enable us to draw near. How do birds know there is a full birdfeeder? Probably their birdy friends tell them, even across species! How will these other 4,253 people groups know? We must go and make disciples!
Looking forward to praising God with you now and always!
Songbirds in the spring are such a wonder to behold. Robins, doves, chickadees, bluebirds all sing along happily and then a jay or mockingbird swoops through with his cacophanous call. Stillness prevails for a few moments, then the sweet melody resumes.
Do you have a birdfeeder still?
In our small group study, Emily Smith remarked that she continues to fill the bird feeder even now in this season of plenty just so she can see the birds and hear them outside her window. As she spoke of this small extravagance, I was reminded of how much more our Heavenly Father lavishes on us. I don't mean a prosperity gospel, but gosh we sure are a blessed people! Why does He do it, even when we don't deserve all these blessings? He desires to hear us sing! Just like Emily with the birds, He desires us to draw near to Him and sing for joy (Psalm 100).
Look outside, all you people in the northern hemisphere. See all that glorious spring variety? God is a a god of creativity and beauty, creating an intricate world just to enjoy. While these things are functional, I surely wouldn't call this extravagance a strictly utilitarian system. Evolutionists may say there is redudency in pants and animals to ensure survival and a continual food source, but I counter that if it is strictly utilitarian, why is there so much variety? Why would there be so much extra, unexpressed DNA that evolved and remained? My answer? God is a great artist. He put in lots of extra details so that over time, the fulness of His creation would be expressed. It is rather like a sculpture that developed a beautiful patina as it ages--it isn't exactly how the artist made it at first, but he knew that it would change and mature into an enduring work of art. I mean, can you imagine a gleaming and shiny Thinker? Rodin understood how the bronze would change after casting and make the exquisite form into a subtler, individual piece. The 20+ castings of this all look a little different depending on their atmosphere. Wow, just think, a sculpture out of a single alloy can change and look vastly different from the same mold and same materials in just over 100 years. What then can we expect from God's creation with so many complex materials--look around! We can see the vast imagination of God and know that we are made in His image. We look at the art of the Masters or on our own refrigerators and see remarkable creative expression and know it is only a foretaste of what God has in store!
Why are there 20 different species of birds at Emily's feeder? It is a beautiful sound to hear so many different songs intertwined. More in a few days about this!Carney Familyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08328006328710037019noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6799326066428443855.post-42255150803766764442012-03-18T23:58:00.001-04:002012-03-18T23:59:17.320-04:00Priesting the Gospel

Well, I promised some insight from Perspectives, but it is hard to distill down such an amazing first 2 weeks to a blog short enough to read! What strikes me this morning is one short line to "priest the gospel" not just "preach the gospel."
What's the difference? You've known some great preachers, right? Highly polished sermons, great theatrics and stories, perfect TV face? Were you impressed? Did you really feel Christ's love from them?
Now remember a really great priest or pastor. I really like the term pastor since I understand about sheep and shepherding. It takes really getting in the muck with your flock to be a good shepherd. Good pastors are the ones who cry with you when you talk about losses, work shoulder to shoulder with you on things and listen when you need to vent. Through this building of true relationship, not merely preaching at us does one really understand the difference.
God calls all of us to "priest" the gospel. From our abundance of joy in God's glory we should overflow with the desire to share this with others. This means our sharing or evangelism doesn't come from a sense of duty, but from a love of God. When we share our faith and joy of salvation with someone, especially if we don't know them well, it springs out of our love for God as much or more than our love of the person.
Whew, much more to come, but there is a lot of reading and writing and thinking in Perspectives, though I highly recommend it! It has already caused a bit of paradigm shift in our thinking about missions. www.perspectives.org.
Carney Familyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08328006328710037019noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6799326066428443855.post-62222216100123520192012-03-02T07:23:00.001-05:002012-03-02T07:23:18.902-05:00PerspectiveWow, nearly a month already! Where does the time go? Somehow we have gotten terribly caught up in the busyness of life and haven't communicated in a while. After 2 Real Life Real Impact student weekends, 10 days in Nicaragua, and a CVM Board meeting in CA I feel like I am on spiritual overload! God is so good, but it took me a while to recover.
We are now officially in our third month of deputation and I think the Lord is teaching us patience.... It seems like it will take forever to have our monthly budget coming in or pledged.
God is blessing us through many of you and your gifts though! We are glad you are enabling us to be the conduits through which your ministry to God's people can be carried out. Keep praying for the people of Bolivia and us as well as about your role in this ministry.
We are beginning the Perspectives on the World Christian Movement course this week--wow! This is a bigger undertaking than I realized, but I have been blown away in the first chapter already. Look for some insights from this course in the upcoming weeks.Carney Familyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08328006328710037019noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6799326066428443855.post-82188928966737596032012-02-06T09:40:00.000-05:002012-02-06T09:40:06.059-05:00Our God is AMAZING!This morning is our last full day in Nicaragua. It is a day of rest and regrouping. I am sitting and watching the Pacific break on the rocks, waiting for the few surfers to paddle out and tackle the waves. It is a tough life...
We have had a great week of training though. We, along with 10 other CVM fieldworkers or candidates have been working 8am to often 7 or 8 pm daily on a training called "Training of Trainers." This is an exciting, practical method of adult education based on Participatory Learning. The gist of this is involving trainees (on our staff, in communities, or anywhere) to engage in dialogue through skits, picture codes, etc to discover their own needs and have ownership of the material they learn. A simile for this is like how David and I joke that our marriage is happy because we always let the other person think it was their idea! It isn't so devious as that, though. It is an amazing method of teaching and learning rather than our traditional school method of banking--dumping knowledge into a brain and expecting regurgitation of answers.
Anyway, it has been an intense week of learning and application, we even had to develop our own training programs to present to our classmates. The bonding between our coworkers was amazing. I am constantly reminded of what an excellent example of the family of Christ that we have in Christian Veterinary Mission.
We have now been at the beach for a day or so with the other fieldworkers from Latin America and have loved picking their brains about crosscultural living and the odd things we should plan to bring with us! More about that in the future...
